Harlow Area Guide

Harlow is a town in the South East of England in the county of Essex. The town is about 25 miles from the centre of London and 9-12 miles from Stansted Airport. Harlow is on the borders of Essex and the county of Hertfordshire, so close that while standing in Harlow you can have a foot in both counties.

Harlow was one of the first new towns constructed since the Second World War to ease overcrowding in London. In an area that was once a number of small villages, the master plan was drawn up by Sir Frederick Gibberd in 1947.

The development incorporated the market town of Harlow, now a neighbourhood known as Old Harlow, and the villages of Great Parndon, Latton, Tye Green, Potter Street, Churchgate Street, Little Parndon, and Netteswell. The town has already experienced expansion. The first of which was the "mini expansion" that was created by the building of the Sumners and Katherines estates in the mid to late seventies to the west of the existing town. Since then Harlow has further expanded with the Church Langley estate completed in 2005, and its newest neighbourhood Newhall nearing completion.

Harlow has all the amenties you would expect of a modern town and benefits from a variety of activities and attractions. The Playhouse Theatre has plays, films and shows. Sports are well catered for, a new athletics track is open and a new wet and dry centre Leisure Zone is now open.

Harlow boasts a 164 acre town park with river walks, views and a number of attractions. Attractions include a paddling pool, music events, and the Harlow Town Show in the summer, and the annual fireworks display in November, Pets Corner and the adventure playground.

The Gibberd Garden is an Essex tourist attraction with glades, groves, pools and alleys that provides settings for some 80 sculptures, architectural salvage, large ceramic pots, a gazebo and a moated castle.

The Harlow Museum is open from Tuesday – Saturday from 10am – 5 pm and admission is free.

The town has one of the most extensive cyle track networks in the country, connecting all areas of the town centre and industrial areas. The cylce network is composed mostly of the original pre-new town roads.

When it comes to retail there are two main shopping areas. The Water Gardens located at the town centre and Temple Fields where the larger out of town warehouse style shops are located.

Industry is diverse, many firms taking advantage of the M11 and the nearby A10 linking Harlow with London, Cambridge, Stansted Airport and the M25. Harlow is also served by two stations, Harlow Town and Harlow Mill, linking to London and Cambridge; neither station is in the town centre. In London the train terminates at Liverpool Street and Stratford Stations, the trains are operated by National Express East Anglia.
